HISTORICAL URUGUAY as seen by Chilean El Mercurio

 

Earlier this month, a whole magazine about “URUGUAY HISTORICO” appeared in El Mercurio, Chile’s leading paper. Its great pictures as well as its description of Uruguayan towns, city streets and country side, make for great reading. Montevideo is a nice surprise. A capital city without the disadvantages of a capital city. A city that lives at a slower pace, influenced maybe by the Rio de la Plata, on which the city sits, with many kilometers of “rambla” (coastal roadway), the Rio de la Plata frames the city like a urban park, with the landscape that inhabitants need to socialize, enjoy and relax. But it has other charms as well: well conserved Nineteenth century buildings, parks, wide tree lined streets, a historical center that keeps adding new restaurants, stores located in restored buildings that coexist with traditional stores like bookstores, cafes and antiques…
